Toys made in the US are, for the most part free from at least the BPA's. Toys made in China and some other foreign countries contain a shopping list of toxic substances. High levels of lead in particular are routinely found in toys manufactured in China.
Remember those tennis balls? A study in 2009 discovered that 48% of tennis balls made specifically for the pet industry had detectable to high levels of lead, arsenic, chlorine and bromine. Studies in humans have linked these chemicals to learning disabilities, reproductive problems, liver toxicity and cancer.
If you own a cat you might have purchased one of the many catnip toys sold in pet stores. What you need to know is that many of the catnip toys from overseas factories have tested positive for high levels of chromium. Chromium is a known carcinogen.
When you are walking through a pet store it is very tempting to buy your pooch or kitty one of those bowls with the cute little paws and sayings on them. The problem is that the paint used to make those bowls look so cute can have very high levels of lead which can leach into your pet's food over time.
Plastic pet bowls are not much better. Along with the risk of having high levels of BPA's, they also have a porous surface which traps bacteria. The bacteria grows in the pours until it reaches harmful levels. For example, the term "kitty acne" refers to a condition found in cats. The bacteria that grows in the pours of a plastic bowl attaches to a cat's chin. The kitty picks up the bacteria as she eats and over time her chin will have tiny blackheads. Eventually the blackheads will become raised, red and itchy, requiring antibiotics and a vet bill.
So, what can you do to keep your pet safe from harmful substances like I describe above? Here are some tips:
1. For pet toys, buy only toys manufactured in the United States.
2. Select toys which are certified safe by a third-party laboratory.
3. Make sure catnip toys are made of certified safe fabric and that the catnip is organic.
4. Only use stainless steel bowls to feed your pet.
